Have you ever read the kids book, Zen Tails : Happiness is Sharing?
If you haven’t I highly recommend you do. This short and sweet tale is a family favourite at our house. My 6 year old has been read this story as well as Wisdom is Listening, another Zen Tail, since she was about 2.5 years old. Of all the stories she could recite, Happiness is Sharing is one which has resonated and stuck. I purchased these cute little Zen books because I wanted an aid to teaching her about sharing in a short and sweet format. However, these Tails have become much more than that.
When I was thinking about what I could write on this blog, beyond my fledgling indie business, these little books were at the forefront of my mind. Why? Well, it’s not just our daughter that has benefited from this story. I have as well. The past 6 years or so have been a rollercoaster for many reasons, there were lots of plunging headlong into the abyss trials as well as a few accelerations to the top. I can happily share that I feel that life has been on the up for quite some time. No more uncertainty, no more wondering when the hell things are going to go from bad to worse or when things are going to get better.
2010 brought tremendous changes and plunges into the great unknown, and the abyss as well. Some of the events, which are perhaps too personal to share here just yet, led me to search, explore and discover what my passions in life are. Things that I longed to be, longed to do became a part of daily life. The start of 2011 saw my inner light bulb spark and the questions in my head have been endless ever since. What creative endeavour or interest can I delve into or return to? What do I like doing? What do I love? What do I want to become? What can I share with others? How do I want to spend my time? Really, what on earth are my goals? And so my art hibernation ended as I began a raft of creative online classes to awaken my artistic spirit and numerous fervent searches online for inspiration and connection with like minded souls.
Where was I? Oh, that’s right Happiness is Sharing. I am reminded of the lesson in this book every single day. When I’m having a sucky, down-in-the-dumps day and procrastinating like crazy about art I share this with my bestie and she magically has this cheerleader power to get me out of that rut by reminding me about my good points (Yes, smarty pants sniggering in the corner, I DO have good points!). Proof #1 that Happiness is Sharing. When I find awesome cool links to stuff I love (ok, art, blog and shop links!!) and I know my friends or online community folk will like, I share. Proof #2 that Happiness is Sharing. When I see The Big Issue seller near my office singing a tune or simply trying to get passersby attention, I think wow, his happiness, his effort, his spirit is infectious, so I buy a copy of the magazine giving more than the cover price and the gratitude and smile I get in return is Proof #3 that Happiness is Sharing.
I don’t think I need to convince anyone who may come across this blog post what my message is. What I’m trying to say and I must quote from one of my favourite authors of all time, JK Rowling, that “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light.”
I turned on the light and it ignited my creative spark which had been hibernating on and off for years, all because I wondered for so many years do I really have anything good to share with the world? Should I really bother trying to do what lights me up and makes me happy? Will anyone like it and if they don’t, will I care, will it make me stop and give up?
Those questions have answers now. 1. Yes! I think I do, and I’m on a lifetime mission to explore what that/those things might be. 2. If I don’t try, how on earth will I know? If it makes you happy you absolutely MUST do it. 3. Hmm, ‘they’ might, ‘they’ might not (who are ‘they’ anyway?). I might care, but will I let it stop me? No. Because, “there is a light and it never goes out”. You can thank Morrissey for that pearl of wisdom.
And about Wisdom is Listening. Well, that’s a long work in progress at our house. Seriously, I DARE you to try to get a 6 year old to listen! If you have any tips, please share with me! : )
