Following my first group art exhibition in October, I was spent. I was exhausted by the organising, preparation and my expectations. Up until recently, I hadn't picked up a paintbrush since the final brush strokes on the last painting I painted for the exhibition.
Once the dust settled and I regained my composure following 4 days of painful migraines and huge swings of self-doubt, I began to figure out why I do what I do, why I paint and the benefits practice has brought me. During the lead up to the exhibition, I lost sight of what I enjoyed most about it - the wild abandon, the experiments, the surprising outcomes and just immersing myself in all of it, happily. It has been too long since I felt the wonder of my experiments. I had to find my way home.
I started with gratitude. I am so thankful for having the gift of creativity. I am fortunate to be reminded by my family, close friends and my friends in my daily profession (which has nothing to do with art, by the way!) that it's good that I do what I enjoy and that I'm artistic and creative. From this I discern that being creative is a rare talent and I should enjoy what I do! Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy it, but since I started my creative biz last year I have lost sight of the enjoyment, fun and play of being a creative person.
Fortunately, I am part of multiple online communities where creativity reigns and I am constantly reminded to practice. Jessica Brogan of In Search of Dessert created this card swap and the latest one is a mini card swap of 12 altered playing cards with the theme 'permission granted'. You alter 12 playing cards per the theme, send them off and receive 12 cards in return. The whole deck card swaps have been too daunting for me given the exhibitions and my serious creative blocks this year. 12 cards? Easy. Perfect. I enjoy sharing my art with others and this swap came at a perfect time. Playing cards? Check. Art supplies? Check. Wild abandon? Check. Experiments? Here we go! Here are the progress photos leading to the final cards complete with permission slips. I encourage you to play along next time Jessica coordinates a swap. This was lots of fun and the boost I needed to find my happy, creative self again. Thanks Jessica!
